Chisato organised the most fulfilling course in tableware. We had the benefit of in-depth knowledge from both Chisato and Sensei. My hope was that we would learn the particularities of Japanese ceramics and something of the philosophy behind the work, which we did. We also enjoyed the unexpected extras of being with a lovely group and a great mountain hostel where we were fed well and cared for. Chisato considered every aspect of the course including having fun while the pots dried and were fired. We learnt so much and enjoyed every aspect thanks to Chisato’s planning

The Japanese Tableware Ceramic Workshop was an unforgettable experience. The instructor INOUE SENSEI was not only experienced but also super energetic and fun, sharing unique techniques such as his glaze-making process using his own rice straw ash.

Set in a stunning wooden studio surrounded by forests and mountains, the ambiance was magical. Accommodations at Open Heart Pension enhanced the experience with delicious homemade Japanese meals that varied daily, alongside additional workshops like calligraphy and sushi-making. They really meet the expectations of their name!

Connecting with fellow ceramic enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds fostered a warm, friendly atmosphere, making this workshop a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Chisato’s efforts made it all possible. I am truly grateful for this once in a lifetime experience!!!

Chisato's table wear workshop in Takayama was one for a lifetime. Set in an absolutely beautiful dell nestled in the Japanese Alps, we spent every day with the deeply knowledgeable and hilarious Inoue Sensei. We were constantly learning, and sensei answered all of our questions thoroughly but in a way we could understand. He is truly a great teacher. The family who ran the pension we stayed at were warm, welcoming, and generous. And such good cooks! The food was outstanding. Chisato-san organized a truly great experience that I will never forget. I'll be on the look out for any more.

The Japanese tableware workshop organized by Chisato Kuroki was truly a one-of-a-kind, incredible experience. Over the course of nine days in the beautiful countryside of Takayama, we had the privilege of learning from a master potter whose unparalleled knowledge and skill were matched only by his openness and generosity in sharing his craft. Despite the language barrier, communication was seamless, thanks to Chisato who was there to translate every step of the way. We were immersed in a wide variety of techniques, covering so much in a relatively short time. The kindness and warmth of both the master and Chisato made us feel welcome not just in the workshop but also in the community, taking us to a local soba restaurant and even to an onsen. These moments added a personal and cultural richness to the experience that I will treasure forever. I came away from this workshop not only with new skills and knowledge but also with deep gratitude for the hospitality and artistry I encountered. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in Japanese pottery.

Takayama (高山) is a city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. To differentiate it from other places named Takayama, the city is also commonly referred to as Hida-Takayama. Takayama retains a traditional touch like few other Japanese cities, especially in its beautifully preserved old town. It ranks as a prime candidates among travelers wishing to add a rural element into their itineraries.

Takayama gained importance as a source of high-quality timber and highly skilled carpenters during the feudal ages. For these important resources, the city was put under direct control of the shogun and enjoyed quite a bit of prosperity considering its remote mountain location. The Takayama Festival, held in spring and autumn, is considered one of Japan's best festivals.
